Genesis Academy: Genesis Launches Clinical Training and Education Program

Genesis today officially launched the first module of the Genesis Academy, designed to support clinical end users in applying Genesis technology to drive patient safety and release time to care.

Sharing Expertise, Clinician to Clinician

The appointment of Heather Graham as Clinical Training and Education Manager has enabled this significant addition to the Genesis offering, allowing the company to deliver clinical end-user training directly to front-line staff. Heather fulfils a national role at Genesis and is responsible for the strategic development and implementation of the education programme in the UK. She brings deep clinical experience, having worked as a Senior Staff Nurse in adult and neonatal critical care and as a Clinical Nurse Advisor before moving into clinical training.

Genesis brings real-time visibility and control to the point of care — helping hospitals track demand for stock and surfacing the data needed to reduce cost variation in medical procedures. Advanced, proven software uses barcode scanning to track, count, and cost everything used in the hospital, releasing clinical staff from paper-based administrative duties and freeing more time for patient care.

“This is a significant move forwards for Genesis in our ability and commitment to add value for the clinical end users we collaborate with,” said Heather Graham. “We are committed to working with the team to help increase patient safety and, crucially, help clinicians realise the clinical benefits of Genesis technology. We look to offer this support and deliver the benefits to our customers across the UK.”

Hospitals have a mobile clinical workforce, and Genesis is designed for it. Our handheld system holds the entire hospital catalogue in the palm of the hand — enabling users to scan products, locations, staff, and patients quickly and efficiently. Stock checks, lot/batch/serial number recording, patient ID, stock ordering, movement and receipting (even of non-GS1 barcoded items), and implant tracking are all available in real time, on the move.

Effective use of Genesis by clinical end users is not only about direct savings — it is about reducing the potential for mistakes and treatment delays. The Scan4Safety trial was never just about saving money; it was about avoiding a repeat of incidents like the 2010 PIP breast implant scandal, which affected 47,000 British women. In that case, an inability to trace patients who received the faulty implants had severe consequences. Barcode scanning — of both supplies and patients — means everything can be tracked and traced.

Even outside that extreme end of the spectrum, improved clinical supply management can have a meaningful impact on patient welfare. In high-value surgical areas, inventory management technology ensures the critical and correct stock is available — preventing cancelled operations and the use of expired stock. Great training and awareness is the foundation that makes it work.
