GS1 standards
Data and Interoperability
Definition
GS1 standards are the global system of unique identifiers and barcodes used to identify products, locations and other entities in healthcare and other industries. GS1 is what makes it possible to scan a single barcode and know exactly which item, in which lot, expiring on which date, is in your hand.
Why it matters
Without a common standard, every hospital, every manufacturer and every IT system has its own way of identifying a product. That makes recalls slow, traceability patchy and reporting unreliable. GS1 standards solve that problem at a global level and underpin both UDI regulation and the NHS Scan4Safety programme.
