Master data management

Data and Interoperability

Definition

Master data management is the discipline of maintaining authoritative, accurate, consistent reference data across an organisation. In healthcare supply chain, that means the item master, the supplier master, the contract master and the location master, all kept clean and in step.

Why it matters

Master data is the connective tissue of any complex organisation. When it drifts, everything downstream drifts with it. In hospitals, the consequences range from inconvenient (a report that does not reconcile) to dangerous (a recall that misses affected stock because the product was recorded inconsistently). Continuous master data management, rather than periodic clean-up projects, is what holds the rest of the supply chain together.
