Point of care scanning
Clinical Supply Chain
Definition
Point of care scanning is the capture of product, patient and procedure data at the moment a product is used in clinical care. It typically involves scanning a barcode on the product, a wristband on the patient and an identifier on the procedure or location, and is the foundation of clinical traceability.
Why it matters
Traditional clinical workflows capture product use after the fact, through paper records or post-procedure data entry. Point of care scanning captures the same data in real time, at the moment care is delivered. This produces a clinical record that is accurate, time-stamped and linkable to the product's full supply chain history. It also reduces the manual work involved in documentation.
