PPI (Physician Preference Items)
Clinical Supply Chain
Definition
Physician Preference Items, or PPI, are high-value medical devices used in procedures where the choice of product is driven primarily by clinician preference rather than by procurement. Orthopaedic implants, cardiology devices and surgical instruments are typical examples.
Why it matters
PPI spend is typically the largest single category of supply spend in a procedural hospital, often accounting for a substantial share of total non-labour spend. Because product choice is driven by individual clinicians, PPI is also the most difficult category to standardise, contract and control. Visibility of variation, with the data to discuss it with clinicians, is the foundation of any serious PPI savings programme.
