Tissue traceability

Clinical Supply Chain

Definition

Tissue traceability is the practice of recording, for every human or processed tissue product, its origin, handling, storage and clinical use. It is required under tissue safety regulations in the UK, Ireland and the United States, and is a patient safety imperative.

Why it matters

Tissue products carry risks that other medical products do not, including the potential transmission of disease. Regulators require unbroken traceability from donor through to recipient. Traditional tissue tracking is paper-based, time-consuming and a known source of regulatory findings. Modern tissue traceability is captured at the point of use, in the same workflow as the procedure itself.
